LONDON LANDFILL SITE WIDENS GEOGRAPHICAL REACH AHEAD OF TAX EXEMPTION ABOLITION The major licensed landfill facility within the London boroughs can now accept materials from anywhere in southern England following a variation to its planning permission. The announcement by operators Tilfen Land comes as tax exemptions for contaminated land expire on April 1, 2012 - a date that will also see the standard rate of landfill tax rise from £56 per tonne to £64 per tonne. The facility, known as LF3, sites within the London Borough of Greenwich, and takes hazardous material - primarily contaminated granular soils classified as hazardous waste - into a facility that has been fully engineered to ensure there is no impact on the surrounging area. "With landfill tax exemptions due for abolition in a few months time, the increased ability of LF3 to accept materials from a greatly expanded geographical area will offer many more contractors and others in the construction and house building industries access to a major and established facility," says Tilfen Land's director of real estate Terry Adams. "LF3 is located within easy reach of the major transport arteries for London and the south east and has an estimated remaining life of 10 years. With the facility's expanded reach we can now work with those who are conducting business right across the south of England and need access to a licensed landfill." On completion, LF3 - which is actually a land raising exercise - will form a hill with excellent views across the Thames estuary. Much of the site has been landscaped and planted with this, together with a wetlands project to treat leachate, provides a suitable habitat for wildlife including water voles and kingfishers.
